What’s your story?

My story is quite long and circuitous, and so far has put me back very close to where I started. The path has been a series of inquiries towards seeking a creatively satisfying and ethically sound practice integrated with a quality life. I grew up in rural Vermont with craftspeople parents, so I have both this land and handwork in my heart. After college I spent 10 years in various building trades and farming, then went to grad school for design. I spent another 10 years doing digital product design for large corporations in the US and Asia. In 2012 when I was living in India and helping start up a design office in Bangalore, I took several weeks right at the end of monsoon season to ride my bicycle across south India. I was getting out of the city right when rural communities were planting their rice crops. I smelled soil for the first time in a long time and knew I had to get myself back to a rural life. Within a year I had bought my current little house and studio, and soon after I was starting to delve into a fiber practice and relearn my home landscape by exploring for dyes. Now, almost 10 years into it, I can't really say the "business" has grown that much, but my depth of knowledge about natural dyes is constantly expanding and delighting me, and I am building a community of like-hearted farmer-naturalist-artists. Right now I'm at a crossroads in the journey where I'm desiring to have a greater impact beyond my individual studio practice. I'm living in that question and open to what might come next.

Vermont

What are your values?

Connection and Nurture: It’s my intention to link people in a warm, visceral way to the simple beneficence of the land through these natural dyes and fibers.

Ethics and Sustainability: I am continually learning and teaching best practices for the ethical foraging and regenerative farming of dye plants.

Anti-consumerism: I embrace the slow work of high quality craftsmanship as an act of resistance against the overabundance of stuff for sale.

Authenticity: staying true to myself and true to my materials.
